Changing Earth's Surface: Chapters 8 & 9
Learning Targets
- I can explain how physical and chemical weathering leads to erosion and the formation of soils and sediments.
- I can explain how mass wasting events are caused and how they affect human activities.

Welcome to Earth Science!
LT = I can explain how physical and chemical weathering leads to erosion and the formation of soils and sediments.
Getting Started Agenda:
- Syllabus and Expectations can be found by joining my class on Edmodo. Please do so now!
- Create a google document and give it a title that follows the following format; Period number (P?) Last name first initial and Earth Science Journal. Example = P1 Lincoln A Earth Science Journal. Share this with me right away. Be sure to select that I can edit the document and uncheck the box that sends me an email notification.
- Now that thats done, we can get started. The vast majority of your work in this class will be posted in the journal you just made. Plan on using it daily, and expect that it will be a fairly large document by the end of the trimester.

3/13 and 3/14 - Data Collection
- Any Questions from your reading guide?
- We will be conducting a laboratory investigation over the next couple days. Please open it here. Make your own copy and add P1 last name and first initial to the beginning of the title and share it with Mr. Smit. Ex = P1 Beiber J Chemical and Mechanical Weathering
- You will be in small groups of 3 or 4. Work together on all aspects of the investigation including thinking, conducting, and cleaning.
- Lets begin.
3/14 and 3/17 Data Analysis
- Today and Monday, you will need to complete your data analysis and answer the questions presented in your lab.
- Produce your graphs using a spreadsheet. We will share this spreadsheet for doing so.
- Paste your graphs in your lab document in the appropriate places.
- Answer all lab questions
- Class discussion of your results.
- Journal Rubric. Please open this attachment and paste it into your journal. This will be the rubric we will be using throughout the trimester. Follow the instructions and and have your journal ready to be checked.
- Quiz Monday - Mechanical and Chemical Weathering. (this may occur Tuesday if we run out time)

LT 2 I can explain how mass wasting events are caused and how they affect human activities.
Agenda:
- Reading Guide Discussion.
- Open the project instructions.
- Select partners and types of mass wasting.
- You will be researching and producing your presentations Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Resentations will begin on Monday the 24th.
- Lets get started!
3/24/14
- Continue working on your presentations.
- Have your work peer-edited today by at least one other group, and peer-edit at least one group. Provide at least 10 comments to the presentation that suggest improvements or compliment aspects of the presentation you admire.
- Our goal is to begin presentations Tuesday.
3/25/14
Daily Focus - How do humans deal with and prepare for each type of mass movement/wasting.
Use this document and internet research today to answer these questions - apply this right away to your projects.
Many laws and ordinances prohibit people from building homes and other structures in areas that are prone to mass movement and wasting such as sand dunes and areas like Lake shore Drive . Do you agree with these laws? Why or why not?
Presentations begin Tomorrow!
3/26 and 3/27/2014
Presentations - Please open this attached document to be used during presentations today.
Your documents must be shared with prior to presenting.

Explore/Plan Testing
Students with last names ending A-J, report to the library.
Student with last names ending K-Z, report to the Mac Lab.
3/31/14
- What types of structures do we build?
- How do we build our homes, roads, and building differently because of these events?
- How much does it cost? Individually? As a society?
