The Respiratory System
Learning Targets
- I can list and describe the generalized functions of the Respiratory System.
- I can list the major organs of the respiratory system and explain the function of each.
- I can compare , contrast, and explain the mechanism responsible for respiration.
- I can differentiate amongst volumes of air exchanged during pulmonary ventilation.
- I can explain the mechanisms that regulate respiration.
Wednesday, 5/21/19 -Thursday, 5/22/19
Learning Targets 1-3 should be completed by the end of class Thursday If you complete them, please move ahead to #4 as we will be covering this one on Tuesday in preparation for your investigation. |
Use the bozemanscience.com video above to reinforce your understanding of the functions of the main portions of the respiratory system.

Thursday, 5/22/19
- Outline Research Project - which will continue through the week. Open this link to get started
- LT's 1-3 Review
- Investigation Plan - be prepared to begin as soon as tomorrow.
Tuesday, May 28 - Friday, May 31
Conduct research on the volumes of air .
Steps for Tuesday & Wednesday:
- Design your investigation - fill out the required sections in the investigation plan document shared Tuesday.
- Design a data section/table to record your data in - what will you need to record? what type of volume will you collect? who will you investigate?
- Do a trial run on yourselves. Be comfortable using the materials. Instructions are in the tray with the materials. All used mouthpieces should be put into the large flask when finished, these will be cleaned tomorrow. Do multiple trials so you have an average to work with.
- Collect data - arrange time with other students if needed in advance - contact instructors who may be involved.
- Graphical Analysis - What does your data show?
- Conclusions
- Finished reports to be presented Wednesday and Thursday
- Use a spreadsheet to calculate your data
- What type of graph will best represent meaning within your data?
Monday, June 3
Use the document to the right today to plan your presentation Be sure to follow the guidelines closely. In particular:
Project Rubric - Refer to this often! Wednesday, June 5 Pesentations - To begin today, be sure you have shared your document with me and that I can edit. As groups present today, your role as an audience is to listen closely and evaluate the research being presented. Listen for and prepare questions for each group that address the following:

TBD
LT 3 I can compare , contrast, and explain the mechanism responsible for respiration.
LT 4 I can differentiate amongst volumes of air exchanged during pulmonary ventilation.
LT 5 I can explain the mechanisms that regulate respiration.
Agenda:
LT 3 I can compare , contrast, and explain the mechanism responsible for respiration.
LT 4 I can differentiate amongst volumes of air exchanged during pulmonary ventilation.
LT 5 I can explain the mechanisms that regulate respiration.
Agenda:
- Hypoventilation and Hyperventilation exercise. What results do you see? How do hyperventilation and hypoventilation play a role in controlling respiration? Using your text see if you can find the answer to this question which, in part, helps explain LT 5. For Help - Link 1 Link 2 Link 3
- Free Dive World Record
- Open this outline - Use as a guide to prepare for our Test Wednesday
