The Nervous System and The Senses
Essential Questions:
- How does the structure of the organs and the arrangements of the divisions of the nervous system aid in it's function?
- Summarize how a stimulus becomes a nerve impulse that causes a reflex to occur.
- Distinguish the individual roles the senses play in nervous system function.

Wednesday, 2/26_______________
LTs
2. I can describe the parts of a neuron and explain how it works.
3. I can describe how action potentials and neurotransmitters generate a nervous system impulse.
4. I can differentiate between a 2 and 3 neuron reflex arc.

2. I can describe the parts of a neuron and explain how it works.
3. I can describe how action potentials and neurotransmitters generate a nervous system impulse.
4. I can differentiate between a 2 and 3 neuron reflex arc.
Agenda:
- Using your supplies, build your neuron.
- Complete the Cornell notes. We will discuss action potentials together.
- Once completed, get together with a classmate and use your models, and your Cornell notes to do the following:
- Explain the anatomy of a neuron.
- Identify axon, dendrite, myelin, Schwann cell, and nodes of Ranvier.
- Differentiate between saltatory conduction on a myelinated neuron and a non-myelinated section of a neuron.
- Explain how a knee jerk reaction would occur due to stepping on a sharp object.

LT = I can differentiate between the peripheral, central, and autonomic nervous system.
- The Autonomic Nervous System and The Fight or Flight Response, pgs. 268-272 . After viewing the video, The Human Body: Pushing The Limits the Brain part 1, please read this section in your text on the relationship between the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the ANS.
- Form responses to the following on a new GoogleDoc in your Anatomy Journal or in your notes:
- Can you differentiate between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system?
- Can you explain the physiology (function) of the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system?
- What is the relationship between sympathetic controls, visceral effectors, and parasympathetic controls?

Friday, 3/22 (Following Test 1)
Learning Targets
- I can explain the role senses play in normal sensory function
- I can differentiate between the functions of general and special senses
- I can identify the components of the eye and explain how they promote vision.
Agenda:
- Photoreceptors, chemoreceptors, and mechanorreceptors... oh my!
- Assignment = Complete The Senses Cornell Notes Cornell Notes up through the eye by Tuesday, 3/26.
- Eye anatomy - Lecture and Eye Dissection Will occur Wednesday.
Tuesday, March 26_______
Eye Dissection - follow the instructions and fill out the brief investigation document.
Wednesday, March 27 & Thursday, March 28
Visual Acuity Investigation
EQ = It has been said that many people are normal but few are average. What does this mean when it comes to vision? Compare your vision with that of your classmates in regards to this statement for this investigation. Agenda:
Near point accomodation Blind spot 3. Enter your class data into the provided spreadsheet (see below). Use the results from the class data to prepare your report following the format in the link above. Visual Acuity Student Data Spreadsheet. Resource |
Monday, April 8________
Complete your visual acuity investigations and Present and Defend your claims.
Complete your visual acuity investigations and Present and Defend your claims.
- 30 minutes to work on your investigations
- Research in Progress (RIP). Simply show us what youve been doing with data, and what claim your leaning towards based on your analysis.
